Who are you?

I am Terry Lee Richards II. I play bass and do the classic Metal style vocals with At The Mountain.

I am an American who has been married to my beautiful Kenyan wife, Veronicah, since 2007. We live in Kenya, near the border of Tanzania, with our daughter, Sophia.

Born in 1979, I was blessed with living through the entire 80’s, and have been involved in playing on worship teams since 1996.

Describe your walk with God

I gave my life to the Lord at the age of 5 years old. It was 1984, and my grandma was giving me a bath. She was always talking about Jesus, so I asked her why. She explained how he gave his life for me so that I can spend eternity with him in Heaven. She led me in the prayer right then.

Like many believers, I’ve had my ups and downs with my faith over the years, falling away for a bit. On one of my lowest points, I had pulled away from church pretty hard and was playing a local show. The pastor of my church, Rockchurch, walked in with a few guys from the church and came to me.

It turns out that they were doing an outreach. It worked! I came back, the Word really got into me, the next thing I know, I’m on a missions team to Kenya, where I found my calling in life and my amazing wife.

Why are you a part of “At The Mountain”?

While I have been playing in bands across the USA since I was in my teens, I have always wanted to be in a band with all Christian brothers. Until now, the pieces had not aligned.

Having known Andreas for many years, he found that my family was moving to Kenya. He then told me how he knows a drummer in Kenya, Jonas.

We met up and became instant friends. One day, he calls to tell me that Morten is coming from Denmark. Half jokingly, I asked what instrument he plays. When he said ‘Guitar,’ my instant reply was, ‘Great! Bring him down. I have a few guitar rigs he can run through, plus a drum set that you can use. We’ll jam!’

Jam, we did!

We also instantly clicked as Christian brothers and each shared the desire to have a complete Christ centered band. With each having been involved in heavy music and worship, we wanted to combine the two.

What are your musical influences?

I draw a lot of my influences from Progressive, Thrash, Glam, and Extreme Metal styles, as well as some classic Rock from the 70’s.

When I was turned onto Christian Metal in the early 90’s, Stryper, Tourniquet, Barren Cross, Mortification, Guardian and a few others were such an inspiration, not only musically, but spiritually.

How do you get your sound?

My main bass for live and studio work is my Lakland Skyline 44-60 Custom. The way it sounds and feels are unmatched by anything else I’ve ever owned.

My main amp is a DNA 1350 head, through the DNA DNS-410 cabinet. When I need a more portable, but still extremely powerful rig, I bring my Peavey Minimax head and pair of Peavey Headliner 1×12 cabinets.

For effects, I run a Digitech Bass Squeeze Compressor, Electro Harmonix Bass Soul Food, Elecro Harmonix Bass Big Muff, Electro Harmonix Bassballs, Electro Harmonix Bass Clone, and my Tech21 Sansamp Bass Driver that I’ve been using on everything since around 1998.

I also use a pair of Whirlwind cables that I’ve done countless live shows and studio recordings with since 2001. They’ve never failed me once in over 2 decades!
